Making snack time more fun for toddlers

Lottie is very particular about eating. She knows what she likes and she likes what she knows. Getting her to try new things is a bit of a challenge to be honest. She eats pretty well, but totally within her comfort zone.

I was a ridiculously fussy eater as a child and I really don’t want Lottie to follow that road if I can help it at all. But I’m stuck for ideas as to how to get her trying out new things.

So when Organix got in touch to see if I wanted to try out making a fun snack plate for her, I thought it was a really good idea. Perhaps making food more visually appealing would help her to try things out. She loves the Organix Goodies Gingerbread Men and I really don’t mind her having them as they are a treat without being full of sugar or nasties. They promise to be made with the best organic ingredients and no junk. You can’t argue with that.

So while Lottie napped a few days ago, I set about exercising my creative skills with a fun toddler snack plate.

Making the plate only took about five minutes and was super simple. Here’s the instructions:

Gingerbread Man Winners

Ingredients

3 rectangle pieces of watermelon – 1 big, 2 smaller

½ slice orange

1 slice apple cut into 6 small triangles, 6 tiny rectangles and the number 1 shape

3 Organix mini gingerbread men

1 ½ blueberries – halved

How to make

Step 1

Place the watermelon pieces in a row at the bottom of the plate to form a winner’s podium, with the biggest piece in the middle.

Step 2

Place the orange slice at the top of the plate for the sun.  Add the apple triangles for sun rays.

Step 3

Stand the 3 gingerbread men on the podium. Arrange the tiny rectangles of apple as medal straps and top each with half of a blueberry for the medal.

Step 4

Finish with the apple number one on the central piece of watermelon.

I’ll be completely honest – when Lottie came down from her nap, she looked a bit confused by the spectacle in front of her.

But she soon got stuck in. The gingerbread men were the first to go, but she is only human, and the blueberry and apple pieces went straight in with them, which I was quite surprised by.

Once she had finished the biscuits, Lottie ate the apple, which is pretty rare for her, and then had a taste of the orange too, which I’ve never managed to convince her to do before.

I definitely think thinking about presenting food a bit more carefully is worthwhile. I don’t for a moment expect to have time to concoct pictures from Lottie’s snacks on a daily basis, but I’m going to try and make an effort to do this once or twice a week to tempt her to try some new fruits and foods. Even if she doesn’t eat all of it (The watermelon steps remained in tact), at least it is getting her more familiar with different food and perhaps one day she’ll venture a bit further and try it out.

If you do have a fussy child, there are some great tips over on Five Little Doves that could help.

We were sent some snacks by Organix in order to make these plates, but all opinions are our own. And I made the plate all by myself…

Toddlers care more about presentation than restaurant critics ha ha
I wish they’d acknowledge the work that goes on though abd give us some kind of Michelin star ⭐️ ?

We LOVE Organix and they’re one of the few brands I can rely on to do good dairy free food for Elsie. She loves the carrot cake bars- they’re delicious! x x

Me neither, but it really did get her interested, so well worth a bit of time preparing I think. Good luck creating xx

I remember trying doing this stuff for J, then he would refuse it. Luckily C is the opposite and eats anything.
